What is Tawa Paneer

Tawa paneer is a popular dish served in plenty of Indian restaurants mainly made in a gravy base with soft and luscious paneer cubes. As the name also implies, the entire recipe is cooked on a tawa – which is a flat or can be concave-shaped round pan; which stands out to be an essential piece of utensil in any Indian kitchen.

About This Recipe

Cook with Budgett never fails to surprise you. This Tawa Paneer recipe has tender paneer cubes cooked in a tangy-tingy, onion-tomato masala with capsicum and essential spices inside it. I have made a puree from the tomatoes. However, you can just finely chop them and add them to the gravy sauce.

It is one of the easiest finest, healthy and quick paneer recipes you can prepare. This semi-dry curry can be cooked in less than 25 minutes.

Do not need to worry, if you don’t have a tawa. Swap it up with a frying pan or a medium-sized skillet. Point to be noted:- If you do use a tawa, then make sure to use a medium-sized or a large tawa, so that the ingredients do not spill from the sides while cooking the recipe.

Preparation Part

  • Finely chop the onions and capsicum or green bell pepper.
  • Roughly chop down the tomatoes, green chili, ginger, and garlic with it.
  • Crush the ginger and garlic in a mortar-pestle till the paste comes out to be.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes to a blender and make a smooth puree out of it. Set it aside.
  • Now Chop down the paneer into smaller cubes.

Making Gluten free Tawa Paneer

  • Melt the butter on a tawa or frying pan or the skillet whichever is readily available.
  • Add the carom seeds(Ajwain) and fry them for a few seconds or till an aroma comes into play.
  • Add the onions and saute stirring often till it gets softened completely.
  • Add the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, finely chopped capsicum, or green bell pepper, and saute for about 2-3 minutes on low to medium-low heat.
  • Then add some of the red chili powder, turmeric powder with some coriander powder, and pav bhaji masala. If the pav bhaji masala is not available then don't need to worry, swap it with garam masala powder + dry mango powder.
  • Stir and saute for about a minute or two.
  • After that add the tomato puree and salt according to the taste needed.
  • Stir well and saute till you see extra melted butter releasing from the sides and the masala has thickened up a bit. This process takes about 7 to 10 minutes on low-medium heat.
  • If the tomato masala looks dry enough, then add 2 or 3 tablespoons of water and continue to saute again.
  • Add the paneer cubes and mix them gently so that the masala coats up the paneer cubes evenly and perfectly distributed. Switch off the heat.
  • Then add the crushed dry fenugreek leaves and mix them gently.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve paneer tawa masala with roti, naan, paratha, or bread. Accompany with a few wedges of lemon slices which can be drizzled on the tawa paneer and a side onion salad.
