The respective Paneer Bhurji Recipe is a Punjabi Style Dish. Under Cook with Budgett simply best yet tasty recipes this recipe is perfectly suitable and apt to it, the crumbled homemade paneer (cottage cheese) is complementary made with sautéed onions, tomatoes, and spices for a satisfying and hearty hot breakfast dish.

What is Paneer Bhurji?

Bhurji means scrambled and crushed, so this recipe is basically scrambled paneer AKA cottage cheese. A perfectly savory, tangy, spiced mixture made out of onions, tomatoes, and ginger-garlic paste with green chilies and various spices is then used to adjoin with the crushed paneer.

This flavorful and tasty dish, as with most other bhurji recipes, is quick to make and apt for breakfast.

You can renounce that it is the vegetarian version of the Indian Style scrambled eggs which are popularly called Egg Bhurji AKA Anda Bhurji in Hindi.

  • 4 tablespoons oil or ghee, butter or white butter.
  • Half teaspoon cumin seeds.
  • Half cup finely chopped onions or 2 medium-sized onions.
  • 4 to 5 small garlic cloves + 2-inch ginger made to a paste in mortar-pestle or 2 teaspoons ginger-garlic paste.
  • 2 or 3 green chilies – finely chopped or slit.
  • One cup of finely chopped tomatoes (tightly packed) or 3 medium-sized to large tomatoes.
  • Quarter teaspoon turmeric powder (ground turmeric).
  • Half teaspoon red chili powder or ¼ to Half teaspoon cayenne pepper.
  • Half teaspoon coriander powder.
  • Quarter to ½ teaspoon Garam Masala Powder.
  • 250 to 300 grams Paneer (cottage cheese).
  • Salt as required.
  • 4 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)


  • Crumble or crush the paneer (cottage cheese) and then keep it aside
  • Finely Chop down the onions with tomatoes and some green chilies. Keep aside.
  • Grind the ginger and garlic to a paste in a mortar pestle and then keep it aside.
  • Also, remove the spice powders and keep them aside.

Making Paneer Bhurji Punjabi Style

  • Heat up the oil or ghee, butter in a pan. Let the oil become hot on a medium flame.
  • Add up some cumin seeds. Let them crackle and dance till a change in color visible. Once they get browned completely, then add onions.
  • Mix well and along with it sauté the onions. When the onions become translucent, then add ginger-garlic paste and some chopped green chilies.
  • Sauté for few seconds till the raw aroma of the ginger-garlic fades away.
  • Now add tomatoes and sauté them on medium heat till they become completely soft. You can add a few pinches of salt so that the tomatoes get cooked quicker.
  • Now add all the dry spice powders including turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder.
  • Mix the spice powders very well and sauté it for 7 to 8 seconds.
  • Then, add the crumbled paneer to it. Mix it thoroughly and cook for at least 2 minutes.
  • Don’t cook the paneer for a long period of time otherwise, it will get harden and will lose its softness.
  • Lastly, add some chopped coriander leaves and mix it well again.
  • Serve Paneer Bhurji hot with bread toast. You can also serve it with roti, plain paratha.
